United Arab Emirates (UAE) Travel Guide

The United Arab Emirates consist of seven emirates, each with its own local goverment. The central government is in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE. Although Abu Dhabi is a large, modern city with modern business and shopping districts, Dubai is the most prosperous of the emirates and is a city which combines Western-style business with traditional Arab culture. Dubai is a place where the extravagant is never extravagant enough, and the presence of money is visible everywhere. Dubai has the only seven-star hotel in the world, the Burj al Arab. It is filled with modern shopping malls, the one larger and more luxurious than the other. It has recently completed works on a huge indoor skiing complex and is already working on a larger one. It has started construction of Dubailand, its own Disneyland which, according to its "tradition" will be larger than any Disneypark in the world. And just off the coast there are a few projects going on involving the creation of large artificial islands which, seen from the air, resemble palm trees and the world and will be occupied by luxury hotels, marinas and private villas. All this glamour is combined with tradition and culture. The Dubai Creek, which runs through the hart of the city, divides Deira, the old part of town, of the more modern Bur Dubai. Deira is home to the famous Gold Souk, a covered bazaar of gold shops, and also the spice market. Fishing boats bring in fresh fish from the Gulf and the Arabian Sea. Shopping is a major pastime here and many goods are relatively cheap because the tax rates are very low. Abu Dhabi has good shopping and entertainment complexes as well. Also the duty free shopping at Dubai Airport is known to be among the best in the world. The UAE has an excellent road network, so a good way to discover the rest of the country is by renting a car. Petrol, as expected, is very cheap. Or you could join a guided tour and go trekking in the desert, for example. Websites:
