Turkey is a vast country, stretching 1000 kilometres from north to south and 3000 kms from west to east. While it's not the only country spanning two continents, Istanbul, Turkey's largest city, is the only city in the world that's built on two continents (Europe and Asia). Istanbul is a place where the east meets the west. Its incredibly rich cultural heritage is well preserved, and places such as the Topkapi and Dolmabahce palaces, the Sultan Ahmet mosque and the Aya Sofia museum are a must to see. Shoppers will be delighted in the Covered Bazaar, a network of covered alleys with thousands of shops selling souvenirs, gold, leather and much more. Not far from there you will find the Egyptian Bazaar, the spice market. Getting around Istanbul is easy. There are hundreds of taxis. But surely the most romantic way of getting around is by boat. These travel back and forth over the Bosphorus throughout the day, and you can have a nice day out by taking the special boat from the Kadikoy pier which travels all the way up the Bosphorus till the point where the straits meet the Black Sea. At this point, in a village called Anadolu Hisari, you can spend a few hours strolling around the narrow streets, climbing up the hill towards the ruins of a castle or have an excellent meal in one of the many seafood restaurants. Contrary to Istanbul, Turkey's capital Ankara doesn't have much to offer for tourists. Instead, people wishing to see more of the old Turkey visit Cappadocia, south of Ankara, an area filled with archaeological sights. The western part of the country also has dozens of historical sites, reminders of the times when the Greeks and Romans settled here. Turkey is also a perfect country for a wonderful beach holiday. Thousands of kilometres of coastline await the sun worshippers. The west coast borders with the Aegean Sea, which divides Turkey from Greece, while the south coast, known as the Turkish riviera, follows the Mediterranean Sea. Resort towns such as Cesme, Bodrum, Marmaris, Antalya and Alanya attract many tourists each year, mainly from Western Europe. Travel around Turkey is done mainly by long distance coaches, although low cost flights are also becoming more popular. While most flights from Istanbul depart from Atatürk Airport, on the European side, Turkish Airlines and Pegasus Airlines operate a large number of fights from Sabiha Gökcen airport on the Asian side as well. European low cost carriers that also fly to Sabiha Gökcen include Germanwings and EasyJet, as well as the Turkish airline Corendon and UAE-based Air Arabia.
