Spain Travel Guide

Spain is a country with an extremely rich history. It was a province of the Roman Empire, and was later conquered by the Moors. The year 1492 is significant for three reasons: 1) Cristopher Columbus, who was Italian but set out to explore the world in name of the Spanish Crown, discovered America, 2) The fall of Granada meant the end to Moorish rule in the southern part of the Iberian peninsula and 3) The Jewish population was driven out of the country by the Catholics. While travelling through Spain you will find remnants of its history everywhere, from Roman aquaducts to Moorish mosques and huge castles.

There is a very wide range of things to see and to do in Spain. It is a very diverse country and offers something for everyone. Splendid beaches along the eastern and southern coasts, mountain ranges such as the Pyrrenees and the Sierra Nevada, interesting cities and villages... as one of the largest countries in western Europe, its diversity is huge.

Madrid
Its capital Madrid, located in the heart of the country, is a vibrant and cosmopolitan city famous for its easy-going atmosphere. It is a city with wide lanes, green parks and a splendid offer of culture. The Museo del Prado is one of the best known art museums in the world. Famous sights are the Royal Palace (Palacio Real) and the Plaza Mayor. The Retiro park is a huge green area in the middle of the city, Madrid's Central Park so to speak, with many terraces and ponds. The madrileños visit this park during weekends to enjoy live music and stroll around.

Barcelona
Barcelona, Spain's second largest city and Madrid's eternal competitor, doesn't have less to offer the visitor. Home to the famous Sagrada Familia, the unfinished church designed by Gaudí, it has a beautiful historic centre and the Rambla, a long promenade leading from the Plaça de Catalunya, the main square, to the Mediterranean Sea aligned with flower and animal vendors, painters and other sorts of artists.

Valencia
Valencia is Spain's third largest city and is famous for its Fallas (carnival) in March, its fireworks and its paella (a rice dish with seafood or chicken). Fallas is a week of madness here. The week before March 19, the inner city is closed to all traffic. Huge statues are placed all over the city and on the final day, the 19th of March, they are all burnt during the so-called "crema". The winning statue survives... for only one hour longer.

Andalucía
Sevilla, Granada and Cordoba are Andalusian cities rich with cultural heritage from both the Moorish period and the era of discovery, when Spanish ships set sail to the New World we now call America. Famous sites include the Torre del Oro and Maestranza (Sevilla), the Alhambra palace (Granada) and the Mezquita (Cordoba). Furthermore, the Sierra Nevada, south of Granada, is a popular wintersports area.

The Costa del Sol, the Mediterrenean coastline stretching from Malaga to Almería, attracts millions of sunseekers every year.

Salamanca, in the west between Madrid and Portugal, is an interesting city and home to the oldest university in Spain. Its Plaza Mayor is known to be the most beautiful in the country.

In the northwest of the country, Santiago de Compostela is best known as a Catholic pilgrimage destination. Thousands of pilgrims each year reach this town by bike, car, bus, train, plane or, more traditionally, on foot (following the 'Camino de Santiago') to pay a visit to its huge cathedral. The city of Zaragoza, between Madrid and Barcelona, is another pilgrimage site.
