Singapore Travel Guide

The island state of Singapore is one of the economic wonders of the world. A former British colony, Singapore formed a union with Malaysia initially before becoming independent. The country has undergone an impressive transformation from a small fishing and trading post to an economic superpower in the region.

Singapore is a very modern city with traditional influences. Its population is very diverse, including people from Malay, Chinese, Indian, Tamil and Pakistani backgrounds. While the official language is English, the languages of all above-mentioned ethnicities and nationalities are used as well. It is amazing how diverse a small island can be. The financial district has an impressive skyline of ultramodern buildings, including skyscrapers, while not far from there you'll find the small shophouses of Chinatown, Little India and Arab Street.

It is also a shopper's paradise, with its most famous street, Orchard Road, lined with huge department stores. From clothing to electronics and other luxury goods, Singapore offers it all.

Boat Quay and Clark's Quay are the two trendy night-time entertainment areas along the Singapore River, with bars, restaurants and night clubs.

Fun for the family can be found at Sentosa Island, a former military outpost turned into an entertainment complex which can be reached by bridge, cable car and boat. Attractions here include an aquarium, waterpark, dancing fountains and a war museum. Another popular attraction is the Jurong Bird Park and the Night Safari.

It is noteworthy to mention that both Singapore's Changi Airport and Singapore Airlines are continuously voted among the best in the world.
