Macau Travel Guide
Special Administrative Region of China

The former Portuguese colony of Macau is located about 60 kilometres (38 miles) southwest of Hong Kong. It was handed over to the Chinese in 1999, two years after Hong Kong was given back to China by the British. Always having been in the British crown colony's shadow, Macau is working hard to catch up in terms of attracting business and tourism.

Macau is now a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China, which means that it is part of the People's Republic of China but has its own local government and special privileges. For example, Macau has its own immigration service and its own currency.

Macau's main income is generated by gambling. There are dozens of casinos, most of them part of a hotel. The opening of an international airport in 1995 provided an enormous boost, as previously the territories could only be reached via Hong Kong. The majority of the flights now link Macau with Taipei in Taiwan, where the Taiwanese either come to Macau for gambling or use Macau as a transfer point for travelling into mainland China.

Macau's landmark is the Macau Tower, which offers a stunning view of the surroundings and also has a shopping and entertainment complex at the base of it. The combination of Portuguese architecture and Chinese venues makes Macau a very interesting destination. Although Portuguese is still spoken by government officials, for example, Cantonese is the common language used. Many people speak English as well.

Apart from the earlier mentioned airport, Macau can be reached by high speed ferries from Hong Kong (in about one hour) or by helicopter.
