Hungary Travel Guide

Hungary was probably the most westernised Eastern European country during the Cold War era and has always been a popular destination for tourists from both Western and Eastern Europe.

Its capital Budapest can easily be classified as one of the prettiest in the old continent. It is rich with cultural heritage and beautiful historic buildings. Its location along the Danube river gives it a special charm. The city has numerous pedestrian streets and alleys with shops and restaurants. A visit to Budapest would not be complete without having the traditional Hungarian meal, Goulash.

While the rest of the country might not seem too interesting at a first glance, it is certainly worthwile to discover its towns and villages. A popular tourist destination in summer is the Balaton Lake, in the west of the country, which also offers spas. The lake is easily reachable by road from Budapest and coming from Austria, and its own airport offers links with several cities throughout north-western Europe.
