Hong Kong underwent a transformation from small fishing village to one of the world's most important economies during British rule. The territory was handed over to China in 1997 and now has the status of Special Administrative Region, which means that it has its own local government, immigration service and curreny, among other things. Hong Kong is made up of a peninsula and several islands; the main areas are the New Territories (including Kowloon) and Hong Kong Island (including victoria). Victoria is Hong Kong's financial district, with an impressive skyline of modern skyscrapers. Here you can also find many large department stores. Victoria Peak, which can be reached by road and tram, offers a spectacular overview of Victoria, Kong Kong harbour and Kowloon. The south of Hong Kong island is a world apart, with traditional fishing villages. Kowloon is the city's residential area and also the part of town to find markets and small shops selling a whole range of products. Scattered throughout the New Territories are small villages and temple complexes. Shopping is one of the main pastimes here; jewellery and electronic products are the most sought-after goods. Hong Kong boasts its own Disneyland, located between the city centre and the ultramodern airport. A popular trip out of Hong Kong is to neighbouring Macau. This former Portuguese colony and gambling centre can be reached by high-speed ferry and helicopter. Click here to read more about Macau. Websites:
