The Netherlands (Holland) Travel Guide
|
||||||
The Netherlands, also known as Holland, is a small country in northwest Europe. Half of the country is below sea level, hence its name. The southwest was hit by serious flooding in February 1953 following a heavy storm, claiming many victims. Following this disaster, the country embarked on an ambitious project to protect its fragile shoreline with the North Sea. This project, called the Deltawerken ("Delta Works") consists of a series of dams and dykes, some of which are true wonders of technology. Holland actually isn't an accurate name for the whole country, as it covers only two of the twelve provinces (Zuid-Holland and Noord-Holland). However, many people call it Holland simply because it is easier. Also, The Netherlands is a term sometimes used to cover both Holland and Belgium... just to make it more complicated! Its capital Amsterdam is famous for its many canals and old canal houses. It is a truly multicultural city, both because of the many tourists from all over the world and the multitude of immigrants of various nationalities in Amsterdam (and the rest of the country). The Wallen, the city's red light district, seems to be a must to visit for many tourists as well. Besides Amsterdam, Holland has many pretty cities with historical centres, taking you back to the Golden Age, as the period in the 17th century was called when the Dutch explored the world and became wealthy from the trade of mainly spices in the Far East. Haarlem, Alkmaar, Utrecht, Den Haag (The Hague) and Delft all are places worth a visit. The latter is famous for its Delft Blue porcelain ware. Kinderdijk is a village near Rotterdam famous for its collection of windmills. Maastricht, in the province of Limburg in the southeast of the country, is Holland's oldest city and also very much worth a visit. While tulips are originally from Turkey, Holland is known to be the centre of these flowers. Dutch tulips and other flowers are exported all over the world. Het Keukenhof is a park where thousands of these beautiful flowers can be seen. Dutch cheese and wooden shoes are other trademarks of the Netherlands. Getting around in Holland is easy. The Dutch Railways operate a network covering the whole country, and travel times are never too long. While many find that Dutch is a difficult language to learn, with its characteristic 'gurgling' sounds, most people here speak English as well. Many also have some knowledge of German and French.
