Germany is a country with a turbulent history. Colonised by the Romans, it has several interesting historic sites. But its history is of course marked by the First and Second World Wars and its subsequent division into West and East Germany. West Germany, the capitalist part, underwent a spectacular transition from devastated country right after the war to one of Europe's main economies. East Germany, the communist part under control of the Soviet Union and along the so-called Iron Curtain, had a huge amount of catching up to do after the reunification in 1989. That reunification, along with the fall of the Wall dividing East and West Berlin, also shifted the country's capital from Bonn to Berlin. Berlin is currently one huge construction site, being modernised at a tremendous rate. Skyscrapers and futuristic buildings are taking over from dull mass housing complexes, and especially the area where the Wall used to be is being transformed at a rapid rate. Among the most popular places to visit in Germany, Munich (München) in Bavaria is a tourist favourite. Munich offers a rich cultural heritage and good shopping, but is best known for its Oktoberfeste, the annual party-week in October where the local beers flow extravagantly. Cologne (Köln) is another main tourist destination, with as main landmark its huge cathedral. Despite the city being bombed relentlessly during WWII, the cathedral miraculously survived virtually unscratched. Other cities which are of importance for tourism include Hamburg, Dusseldorf and Heidelberg. The Rhine river, which flows from Switzerland through the western part of the country, via Cologne and Dusseldorf into the Netherlands, is popular for river cruises. Its shores are dotted with picturesque villages, castles and vineyards. Frankfurt is the country's financial centre and the main gateway for international flights. Wintersports are practiced in the central Sauerland region and the mountains in the south of the country. Websites:
