France is the largest country in Western Europe and as such has a huge variety of things to offer for tourists. The most important tourist hotspot in France is of course its capital Paris, known as the City of Lights and also as one of the most romantic cities on earth. Paris is one of Europe's largest cities and its various ditricts are so diverse that it would be difficult to sum it up in a few phrases. Main sights and attractions in the city centre include the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre Museum, the Arc de Triomphe and the Notre Dame Cathedral. The Champs Elysees is one of the city's best known (and most expensive) shopping avenues. Other famous tourist destinations in Paris include the Montmarte artist neighbourhood with the Sacre Coeur Church, and the Versailles Palace to the south of the city. France is of course also known as a wine-producing country, and you will find many vineyards where you can taste the various wines throughout the country. Famous wine producing areas include the Bordeaux, Dordogne and Languedoc regions. The Mediterranean coast, known as the Cote d'Azur, includes towns such as Marseille, Nice, Toulon and St Tropez. The tiny country of Monaco, home of the rich and famous and known for its casino, is located just east of Nice and is a popular place to visit on a day trip. The French Alps are popular for wintersports, where the cities of Lyon and Grenoble serve as gateways to the region. Websites:
