Belgium, one of Europe's smallest countries, plays a very prominent role in the continent. It is home to the European Union, and also the NATO headquarters. The country has three official languages. Most people (in the northern part of the country) speak Dutch (or Flemish), in the south French is the main language, while German is spoken by a small community in the east of Belgium. Its capital Brussels, often seen as the heart of Europe, has a beautiful market square surrounded by magnificent buildings. It is home to the world famous statue of Manneke Pis, a little peeing boy. Another famous landmark is the Atomium, a huge metal structure made in the form of an atom for the World Expo held there. Other cities which are worthwile to visit are Antwerp (Antwerpen), Ghent (Gent) and Bruges (Brugge), all of which are easily reachable by train from Brussels. Besides their beautiful historic centres, these cities are well known for their range of beer breweries. The cafes have a selection of dozens of different beers to choose from. Apart from its beer, Belgium is also known for its chips (French (?) fries) and chocolate, and, last but not least, its Brussels sprouts! Websites:
