Austria Travel Guide

Austria's history is deeply anchored in Europe's. Once a great power as the Austo-Hungarian Empire, the country was annexed into Hitler's Third Reich during WWII and later formed part of the "iron curtain" between the capitalist West and the communist East. Nowadays it's a vital link in the development of Eastern Europe as it's catching up with the more modern West.

The current Austria is mainly known for two reasons: Its splendid capital of Vienna, together with Salzburg the home of classical music, and the majestic Alps. Vienna is a true classic capital with wide lanes and palaces, a famous opera and the Danube river flowing right through it. Salzburg, the town of famous composer Mozart, is also an important tourist destination.

The Alps cover a large part of the country and attract many winter sport lovers during the season.
