Austria Travel Guide

Austria's history is deeply anchored into Europe's. Once a great power as the Austo-Hungarian Empire, the country was annexed into Hitler's Third Reich during WWII and later formed part of the "Iron Curtain" between the capitalist West and the communist East. Nowadays it's a vital link in the development of Eastern Europe as this region is catching up with the more modern West.

The current Austria is mainly known for two reasons: its beautiful cities and the majestic mountains. Its splendid capital of Vienna is a true classical city with wide lanes and palaces, a famous opera and the Danube river flowing right through it. Salzburg, the home of classical music and the famous composer Mozart, is also an important tourist destination. The other main cities of Innsbruck, Graz, Klagenfurt and Linz also have plenty to offer to visitors.

The Alps cover a large part of the country and attract many winter sport lovers during the season, as well as hikers in summer. Innsbruck is the main base for trips into the mountains, its airport receiving numerous charter flights with holidaymakers. Well-known wintersports centres in the area include Kitzbuhel, Zell am See and Radstadt.
