Argentina is one of the largest countries in the world, and the second largest in South America after Brazil. This former Spanish colony stretches from north to south over the continent, having a sub-tropical climate in the far north and an arctic climate in the far south. Its capital Buenos Aires is a cosmopolitan metropolis located along the estuary of the Río de la Plata. The city has always been influenced by European places such as Paris, Milan and London and there is a clear European atmosphere here. The central part of the country largely consists of the Pampas, huge plains where people mostly live from cattle farming. The Gauchos, the Argentine version of cowboys, spend their days migrating their herds from one location to the other and drinking maté (a very strong tea) during breaks. Argentinian meat is considered among the best in the world and it is an important export product. The southern half of Argentina is known as Patagonia, a vast area with mountain ranges, gletschers and a fascinating wildlife including sea lions, penguins and killer whales. The island on the southern tip of Patagonia and the continent, Tierra del Fuego, is home to Ushuaia, the southernmost located city in the world. Bariloche, in the west of the country along the Chilean border, is known for its winter sports and chocolate, a product of the many German immigrants here. Argentina's population is very mixed, consisting of descendants of mainly Spaniards, Italians, French and Germans. The famous revolutionary leader Ernesto "Che" Guevara was born in Argentina.
